Intro to Alg/Geom 8: Class Info
Welcome to Introduction to Algebra and Geometry
Expectations
You will be expected to:
1) Take your own notes every day
2) Complete homework assignments almost every night
3) Keep an organized and up-to-date notebook (surprise notebook quizzes will occur!)
4) Ask questions when you are confused
5) Respect everyone in the classroom at all times - this includes only speaking at appropriate times.
6) Bring all of your materials to class everyday.
Materials
This year you will be continuing to use the Connected Math curriculum. You will have five different CMP books to use throughout the year. You should keep your book in your 3-ring binder with your notebook and bring it with you to class every day. We will use the books more than you may have in the past. You will also get time to start homework during class almost every day and the homework comes from the book 99% of the time.
Part of what we will study in math this year includes graphing, solving equations through many methods, and other topics which will require the use of a graphing calculator. When you need a calculator in math, a Texas Instruments: TI-84 graphing calculator will be provided for you. A TI-84 graphing calculator will be available for you to use any time you need a calculator in math class only!! You will not need to bring another calculator to math class at anytime, however, you will need a scientific calculator (not graphing) for science class. Please know that you will not be allowed to borrow a calculator from the math room for during science class. For this reason, you should have your own calculator to use any time you are not in math class.
PLEASE bring pencils, notebooks, etc. to class EVERY day! My classroom is not your local supply store - do NOT expect me to have a pencil for you.
Topics of Study
1) Moving Straight Ahead - An algebra unit which focuses on linear relationships, graphing, equation writing, and the symbolic method. We will also be studying linear inequalities as an extension to content in the book.
2) Looking for Pythagoras - A geometry unit which focuses on areas of squares, lengths of squares, the Pythagorean Theorem, special right triangles, and using triangle relationships to solve real world problems.
3) Filling and Wrapping - A geometry unit focuses on the surface area and volume of boxes, cylinders, spheres and cones.
4) Kaleidoscopes, Hubcaps, and Mirrors - Transformational Geometry. The study of turning, sliding, and rotating shapes in a 2D plane.
5) Thinking With Mathematical Models - An algebra unit which revisits linear relationships studied in Moving Straight Ahead. It then moves onto comparing linear to nonlinear situations. The focus of the book will be on making predictions about real life situations using linear and nonlinear modeling.
6) Statistics - This unit is optional and will only be studied if time permits. The unit focuses on learning about different types of statistical representations, data collection techniques, and measures of center.
