Math 180 Syllabus
General Information
Description
Math 180, Course I, is a math intervention program for grades 6+. It is designed to address the needs of struggling students. The program combines classroom support and adaptive software, which provides students with personalized instruction and practice. By allowing students to learn, practice, and review at their own pace, each student receives an instruction that reflects their strengths and weaknesses.
There are several components of the MATH 180 program, including:
- Student Dashboards that display your child’s recent achievements and provide access to the areas of instruction.
- Personalized software to build skills and provide practice in essential areas such as Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Number and Operations in Base Ten, and Number in Operations in Fractions—skills necessary for success in algebra.
- Access to fun and engaging math games in and out of the classroom through the Brain Arcade, a personalized playlist of games that build strategic and computational fluency.”

INSTRUCTIONAL MODEL
1. Whole Group/Small Group Instruction
2. MATH 180 Software
3. Khan Academy Skills
4. Assessment
• Students divide into three groups (determined by data analysis and class size) and rotate between stations for independent learning and teacher-led small group instruction.
• During small group instruction, the teacher, facilitates instruction to build conceptual understanding, develop reasoning and communication skills, and interpret student thinking.
• The MATH 180 software builds mastery and a mathematical mindset for students through instructional videos, guided problem sets, adaptive formative assessments, and smart math games designed to build fluency.
• The Khan Academy station builds mastery for math skills not taught explicitly through the Math 180 curriculum. Students will have the opportunity to review math standards that they may not have achieved mastery of in the past, but that are necessary for advancement in math knowledge.
Goals
- Students will participate in a problem-centered mathematics classroom in which they will explore, conjecture, reason, and communicate, to solve problems given real-world contexts. Students will understand why they are learning what they are
learning, and how the skill(s) is used in everyday life. - To gain confidence in his/her math ability, making math understandable through instructional diagrams and graphics, interactive activities, and examples.

Discipline
Classroom infractions will be dealt with based on a three-tier system. Each offense will be treated as a separate write up. For example, arriving late to class is a different write-up from arguing with the teacher.
- Level one: Individual discussion with the teacher. I will review the inappropriate behavior and explain what the expected. Students will sign that discipline report to acknowledge they understood the discussion.
- Level two: Restorative Conference. I will discuss the following questions with the students; students will write the answers from the discussion
1)What were you doing?
2)What were you thinking when you did it?
3)What should you have been doing?
4)What can you do in the future to prevent this behavior?
Parents will be called/emailed after the conference.
- Level three: Students will be formally referred to the main office for official school consequences.
