8th Intro Letter and Standards/Procedures

Welcome to World History and Civics!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I am Paula Homa, and I am the Orange Team’s Social Studies teacher.  I am excited to welcome your child into my classroom, and I believe that by working together, we can all make this a productive and enriching year of learning!

In order that you may be able to help your child achieve his or her highest potential in this class, I’d like to tell you a little bit about what our year will look like.  First of all, the content is a half-year World History course and a half-year Civics course.  We will cover such topics as the Reformation, the rise of Empires in Asia, the Constitution and Bill of Rights, national and state governments, elections, and foreign policy. Within the context of these content areas, developing literacy and collaboration skills will be a particular focus this year.  Grades for each marking period are calculated using total-point percentage.  The total points available from all assignments are divided into the total earned to determine the percentage/grade.

Attached to this letter, you will find a list of the general standards and expectations for this class that I will share with your child.  While a set of standards cannot cover every situation and possibility, it can provide a good basis from which to work.  In class, we will also review some of the more specific, procedural classroom expectations.  I would appreciate it if you would take a few minutes to review this information with your child.  We will also be discussing it in class.  This way, all students will know what is expected of them and what they can expect from me, and you will know, too.

Please feel free to contact me by calling by emailing  prh11@scasd.org if you ever have any questions or concerns, or even just to check in from time to time on your child’s progress.

I am very excited about the year ahead, and look forward to having the privilege of teaching your child!

                                                                                                       Sincerely,

                                                                                                           Paula Homa

                                                                                                                    prh11@scasd.org

Classroom Standards and Procedures

Welcome to Social Studies!  I am looking forward to our having a wonderful, productive year together!

The main reason that we are here is so that you can learn.  In order for you to have the optimum opportunity to learn every day, we need to have an orderly and safe classroom in which each of us does our part to ensure the proper learning environment and a positive atmosphere.  Here are some expectations that will allow all of us to get the most out of our time together.  I think you’ll agree that there is nothing new or unreasonable here, and that these are the same things teachers have been asking of you since you first started school.  Of course, school and district expectations apply, too.

  1. We will be respectful and courteous to each other.

  2. We will present a goal-oriented attitude of cooperation and positivity.

  3. We will follow directions and instructions the first time they are given.

  4. We will do our own work at all times, and only work together when instructed.

  5. We will complete and hand in homework assignments on time. Should we not have an assignment completed when due, we will complete it outside of class for the next class meeting and scoring will begin at 50%.

  6. We will record daily homework, project dates, and test dates in an appropriate location.

  7. We will ask for make-up work on the day that we return from an absence.

  8. We will accept personal responsibility for our choices and actions, and will accept the positive or negative consequences of our choices and actions.

  9. We will be proactive, use problem-solving skills, and talk to Ms. Homa any time we have questions, are confused, have concerns, or need help of any kind.
